Mediterranean Courtyard in Cheltenham
The inspiration for this Cheltenham courtyard garden, built in 2011, came from warm sunny holidays around the Mediterranean.
The yellow ochre walls, terracotta pots and the octagon of warm-toned riven paving provide a background to the central fountain and planting; all help to create a Moorish feel, redolent of the Alhambra Gardens in Spain.
The colour scheme for the planting is jewel-bright colours of blue, purple, wine and orange, toned down by the grey foliage from the Elaeagnus, Lavender, Santolina and Lamb's Ears.
Clipped box balls add more structure for the winter months, and emphasis the central square of paving. A specimen Fig tree will in time disguise the bin storage area, and Trachelospermum jasminoides will smother it with a fragrant green mantle. The Agapanthus plants in the pots need staking temporarily to prevent wind-rock.
